COOEE TOWER PLAZA
SYDNEY CBD
Meaning ‘come here’ in the Dharug Aboriginal language, Cooee Tower is calling all to come together and celebrate the multicultural fabric that makes Sydney, Sydney. The striking sculptural84m viewing tower and its subterranean plaza’s is metaphor for supporting one another in creating this diverse and socially cohesive city. Town Hall Square is a decades old redevelopment initiative between the State Government and the local Sydney Council to redevelop the adjacent sites across from Sydney’s TownHall, and transform it into a pedestrian friendly square. The site straddles the corner block between George, Park & Pitt Street and is part of the cities broader 2030 vision to reclaim the city centre from traffic and leave a positive legacy of open spaces.
Sydney is an extremely diverse city with people migrating here from many different countries, including, New Zealand, India, China, Indonesia, England and more. There are over 250 languages spoken alone in Sydney City which was formed by waves of immigration for over 200 years now. Sydney does an excelling job at coming together to foster a vibrant, diverse and inclusive community that offers multiple .
multicultural programs and initiatives. Focusing on the meaning behind the design, multiculturalism, there were a few metaphors that really enabled me to build the foundation and layout of the design. These included, the waterhole, self-expression, communal healing, reflections, untangling and beauty.
The sculptural architectural structure embodies the metaphor of cohesive multiculturalism. The main support structures covered in aboriginal art representing our first nations people. The tethered support wires rise up and support the main structure. These support tethers represent all the 180 nationalities that have made Sydney their home. A metaphor for supporting one another and working together to create a larger vision of the future. As the world finds itself increasingly polarised by the changing geo-political and social and economic landscape, separation is ever increasing towards points of no return. Unity and togetherness are thus becoming increasingly important, and we envisage the Cooee Tower Plaza to become a site where everyone is welcome and celebrated.

The proposed site is located in the heart of the Sydney CBD. This site is a corner block which faces George Street, Park Street, and Pitt Street to the rear
This isometric 3D height map explores the relationship between the site and the direct surrounding environment. The site is nestled between low, medium, and high rise residential and commercial properties which provide shading of the site during different times of the day, and seasons.

Focusing on our meaning behind the design, multiculturalism, there were a few metaphors that really enabled us to build the foundation and layout of our design. These included, the waterhole, self expression, communal healing, reflections, untangling and beauty. From these metaphorical elements the ropes that are one of the main features of the design all represent the different cultures that are present in our city and they all come together at the top of the sculpture to hold the observation tower up. This will be painted in Aboriginal art to show all the cultures coming together to support each other.
