HEALING SPACE - LAKE HOUSE

LAKE TAHOE, CALIFORNIA

Living in urban environments, specifically in larger cities, is associated with higher rates of mental health problems than in rural areas. City dwellers are faced with higher rates of crime, pollution, social isolation, and increased stimulus levels from density, crowding, noise, smells, sights, disarray and a higher intensity of environmental stressors.

So what is the cure? Nature.

The concept of this healing space is inspired by the vision of a bird soaring free, with this motion of upward movement translated into the architecture of the building.  The peaks of the roof point upwards to evoke the feeling of energy, freedom, liberation, and a higher perspective.

The healing space sits over a lake and has been designed to capture the vistas and breezes to provide a calming and inspiring atmosphere, helping to heal their weary minds.

The use of natural materials, such as timbers, stone, and polished concrete set off by white ceramic create of a sense of well-being and harmony, a homage to the organic materials humans have coexisted with for centuries, recreating the grounding energy which subconsciously connects humans back to the notion of home creating a sense of familiarity and comfort becoming a catalyst for healing.

Large windows, bi-fold doors, and extensive openings proliferate throughout the building to capture the views. These vistas create positive space which has been offset by simple, minimalist interiors to avoid an overstimulating experience. This is further enhanced by the play of shadows and penetration of sunlight into  the spaces helping guests to unwind and absorb the healing energy of the sun.
