SYDNEY FESTIVAL - REFRESHMENT BAR
MRS MACQUARIE'S CHAIR
Every January, Sydney Festival starts the new year with a bang, transforming the city with a bold cultural celebration based on critical ideas and cutting-edge art and performance. More than any other cultural event, Sydney Festival defines Sydney's personality. The Sydney Festival refreshment bar is inspired by Sydney’s identity which includes they lifestyle the city offers, its architecture and industrial landmarks and it’s geography. Starting off with the modular system which is made from blonde MDF board which is economical, sustainable and resourceful as it is comprised of wood off-cuts and waste products. The modular system has been formed into the shape of a cresting wave, a direct homage to the cities affinity and connection with the coast and ocean. The small modular components which make up the canopy are an abstract interpretation of the structural elements of the Sydney harbour bridge, fused with the organic curves of the Sydney coastline.
As the light filters through the canopy it creates a dappled light effect similar to being under the limber canopy of a large Australian eucalyptus tree. It’s the light airy feeling which has been carried into the materiality of the Refreshment bar. White concrete, medium Australian hardwood timbers, muted grays, and greens softened with extensive plants provide a relaxed and unwinding ambiance within the bar. Australian bluestone, an iconic Sydney material that adorned many sidewalks within the city center and suburbs have been used as the flooring for the lower level bar and dining area provides a neutral contrast to the light timbers and concretes used.

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT
MODULAR & PAVILION DEVELOPMENT
Concept development for a modular system which will be used to create a pavilion experience. Inspired by the fusion of the industrial design of Sydney Harbour Bridge, while attempting to simplify and slow the designs by implementing curves inspired by the Sydney coastline.
Analogue model explores curves between the joins to create a calming visual line against the straight structural lines. It also makes the component more dynamic from some angles its circular, from others it’s a cross
